5.4 Symbolic Interactionism in action Discussion

Q In late August, a USC professor was removed from teaching his class for saying a Chinese word that sounded like a racial slur. Review the videos and article for an overview of the incident: Here is a more detailed article (Links to an external site.). Here is another video that analyzes the situation. Notice the interpretive approach. This situation is a great example of symbolic interaction in action and found in current events. I want you to place yourself in the interpretive side of the 'objective----interpretive spectrum.' This is an example of what you can do in your group analysis: find a current event and analyze it. Discussion In this situation there are various perspectives to analyze: the professor, students (for the professor), students (against the professor). Apply one of the principles to symbolic interactionism in your analysis, based on your last name. Part 1 In your response: (1) State your principle. Explain how this situation can be understood from your specific principle. (2) Justify your explanation by giving 1 example from this incident. (3)Explain your reasoning • (A-D) First principle: Humans act toward people or things on the basis of the meanings they assign to those people or things. Meanings are socially constructed. • (E-M)Second principle: Meaning arises out of the social interaction people have with each other. Language is the source of meaning and is negotiated. • (N-Z) Third principle: An individual's interpretation of symbols is modified by his or her own thought process- minding, self, and/or the generalized other. Part 2 Respond to 1 classmate. What is 1 weakness of symbolic interaction, specifically to the principle they are using? Continue the conversation, provide feedback, share your thoughts, etc. Respond beyond great work or good job. If you do, that's fine, just elaborate. Grading Review the 3 vertical dots for a description on how you can earn full credit.

The principle of symbolic interactionism that I will be focusing on is meaning. I believe that this situation could be understood from the specific principle of meaning because for people who speak and understand the English language but not Chinese the meaning or the interpretation of the Chinese word “nei ge” in English is a racial slur so by default many of them are going to take offense to it especially if they are black themselves. To the professor and people who understand the Chinese language it is a different story.
